What is a Locator? Behind the Scenes with ChoiceLight’s Network Protectors
When most people think about broadband and fiber internet, they imagine fast connections, streaming movies, or seamless video calls. But before any of that happens, there's a critical layer of behind-the-scenes work that keeps the fiber network safe and functional. At ChoiceLight, one of the key roles responsible for this work is our Locator.
So, What Does a Locator Do?
A Locator is a trained professional who helps protect underground infrastructure, like ChoiceLight’s dark fiber network. Any time digging is planned—whether for construction, landscaping, or utility work—811 must be called to prevent accidental damage to buried lines. That’s where our Locator comes in.
When a call is made to 811, the information is dispatched to utilities and organizations like ChoiceLight. Our Locator then heads to the site and uses specialized equipment to locate and mark the exact path of our underground fiber lines. These marks (often colorful flags and/or paint) act as a map, warning other crews where they should—and definitely shouldn't—dig.
Why This Work Matters
Fiber lines are the backbone of our network. If they’re damaged, it can disrupt internet and data services for schools, hospitals, nonprofits, and businesses throughout our community. That’s why we take extra care to respond quickly and accurately whenever a dig notification comes in.
ChoiceLight Locators don’t just react to dig tickets—they’re proactive, too. They may be present during complex digs, emergencies, or large construction projects to keep a watchful eye and ensure that our infrastructure remains untouched and uninterrupted.
Locators Are Network Guardians
Our Locators are a vital part of the ChoiceLight team. Their work helps maintain the integrity of our network and supports our mission to deliver reliable, high-speed connectivity to the communities we serve. From busy city blocks to quiet rural roads, they’re on the ground protecting our investment in your connection.
